The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme
at the Athénée de Luxembourg
This programme enables students with an excellent command of English to follow academically challenging and balanced secondary studies (with English as a mother- tongue) focusing on languages, arts and sciences, which gives them an excellent preparation for university studies in Anglo-Saxon countries and Europe and life beyond.
Next open day introducing our international programme:
Saturday, November 11th 2017 (10 :00-12 :00)
A general presentation of our international classes and the IBDP will be held by the Coordinator and students from the international classes. The presentation will be followed by a visit of the School facilities and a meet and greet where you will have the opportunity to talk to teachers, students, alumni and parents.
Admission tests for Grades 7 and 10 will be held on July 9th and/or September 12th.
Every student will be requested to hand in a portfolio containing different documents (information regarding the portfolio will be send to the candidates after reception of the registration form). IB World School
The Athénée acquired the status of IB World School in February 2010. This means that we are authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate study programme and to host the two final diploma years as of September 2010. The IB which is offered at the Athénée de Luxembourg is recognized by the legislator as equivalent to the Luxembourgish school-leaving certificate (Diplôme de fin d'études secondaires). Students receive an official MEN document as proof to help with university applications in all European countries.
The Athénée offers a 7 - year study programme, which encompasses three different cycles: following the two successful preparation years (7th ,8th and 9th grades) and the two intermediate years (10th and 11th grades), students automatically enter the actual IB Diploma Programme (12th and 13th grades). Although they may join the programme at any time (given there are still places available) we advise students from the Luxembourgish school system to join the programme in grade 10 to adapt to standards.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a very demanding two-year international programme that meets the needs of highly motivated students and leads to an outstanding qualification that is recognized by leading universities around the world. To earn an IB diploma, students must take and pass examinations in six academic subjects, as prescribed by the IBO. The Athénée does not offer the IB COURSE, as European universities do not accept this qualification.
In addition, students must take the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course that investigates the nature of knowledge in various disciplines (also called applied philosophy), to participate in at least 150 hours of Creativity, Action, Service (CAS), to undertake original research, and to write an Extended Essay of 4,000 words.
